Flex EZ Menu – Next Steps

Flex EZ Meun StackFlex EZ Menu is so much more than a great way to build your RapidWeaver website project’s navigation. It has the flexibility to include images and image galleries. Add video. Include inline content. And power up your tooltips.

For this screencast I not only used Flex EZ Menu, but I also use the Pretty Photo Stack and the Tooltips Stack that are both available from RWExtras. As a side note, you can use the Super Tooltip Stack with Flex EZ Menu.

Join me as I show you how easy you can get the same effects by using Flex EZ Menu.

In-line Styling

htmlIn this video tutorial we are going to learn about in-line styling. What it is and how you can use it within RapidWeaver for your design layout.

I will be using HTMchen, a free HTML editor from MyOwnApps. I also use LittleIpsum, another free application from the MacApp Store, that generates “dummy text”

In-line styling can provide you with more detailed control over the various elements of your page within the HTML tag(s) as opposed to a Styled Text page.

So get ready to enhance your skill set and learn another way you can code some creativity.

Expandable Sticky Bar – Free Public Video

Here’s an interesting Javascript from DynamicDrive that uses the jQuery library.

In this video tutorial I wanted to introduce RapidWeaver users to the Expandable Sticky Bar. I often see users looking for a “fixed” footer or header type situation in their design layouts and this Javascript provides such a feature.

Its very easy to use and in this free public screencast I quickly go over how you can explore this option to obtain this type of look and feel.

RapidWeaver Resources Course 4

RapidWeaver 5In this last class we are going to look at how to use a resource file in the custom CSS panel of RapidWeaver’s Page Inspector.

We are also going to discuss how a resource file has to be accessed if you create separate, or external, CSS files. We won’t create any external stylesheets as this tends to cover a more advanced topic that would be better covered in a separate set of lessons.

RapidWeaver Resources Course 3

RapidWeaver 5In this tutorial about Resources we are going to see where the resource folder publishes too.

The stackBack Stack

stackBack-iconThe stackBack Stack is a "classic" Stack that was introduced back when the Stacks plug-in made its debut. After researching the RapidWeaver forum I found that the Stack was no longer available for download.

Since it was a freely available Stack, I packaged it up with a single page PDF and have made it available for everyone to enjoy. Download stackBack.

I wanted to share how stackBack can add creativity to your Stacks and flair to your page layouts. So join me on this video tutorial covering the basics of the stackBack Stack.

SlideShow Header Stack for FreeStack Theme

Kevin Burns over at SymfoniP has released the first 3rd Party Stack that is only for the new FreeStack Theme from Blueball Design.

This new Stack lets you add a simple "slideshow effect" to your FreeStack header area, all without the help of PlusKit or any additional plugins. In addition to  theslideshow effect , it also lets you use 'warehoused' images to use in this SlideShow effect. I cover this in the screencast too ;)

Join me as we take a look at how easy it is to use this incredible Stack.

Make your Videos playback faster with S3/CloudFront

In our class today for members, I am going to walk you through the key steps in using S3 and CloudFront to deliver your rich media files in RapidWeaver (in my example today we are using video)

Now , I have been using S3 ever since it was first launched a couple of years ago in addition to the more recent CloudFront service. The initial videos we delivered when starting SupportCasts were delivered over S3. However, we now use a commercial CDN offering too but our image storage is handled by S3 for all those who want to know.

Whilst I will not go into the boring details of signing up , if you have an Amazon.com account you are almost there as these are extra add-on services. What I will show you is the following:

  • S3 setup with the AWS management console
  • bucket creation
  • File permissions
  • configuring CloudFront
  • using the media file in RapidWeaver.

After going through the initial setup,  using S3 is a breeze and you will find it is a useful addition to compliment your web hosting which may not be so hot in delivering rich media in other words not great bandwidth throughput and general scalability which is always a problem with shared hosting. Not unless you running your own VPS ;)

Brace yourself for a nice 18 minutes of geeky fun, mistakes and all, and let us know what you think about delivering your videos over CloudFront/S3 (c’mon folks it was a rainy Sunday afternoon here).

Have fun and remember this lesson is only available for 6 and 12 month memberships.

jQuery – TinyTips Tooltip Revisited – Colorful Additions

TinyTips has been updated to version 1.1. What better way to investigate the changes than a new screencast.
Mike Merritt of Digital Inferno has added some colorful additions to this easy and flexible jQuery tooltip.
I will also address a question in this video tutorial that was asked from the original screencasts; “How can you add the image separately using Stacks”.
So grab the new download, set back, and join me as we revisit TinyTip.
